Aside from pregnancy, there are numerous possible causes of a late or a missed period. Although pregnancy is the most common and popular cause of a missed period, there are also several causes of a late or missed period. Most of these are caused by medical and lifestyle that impact the menstrual cycle.

If it took more days than schedule to see your period, there are several thoughts that will be going through your mind. I’m very sure you will be asking yourself this popular question: Am I pregnant? Most people think they are pregnant when they have a late or a missed period.

In some cases, you may miss a period of even more than two months. Some people experience complete amenorrhea, which means the lack of menstruation for over three, four, or more months in a row.

In this article, I will explain the possible causes of a late or missed period and long-lasting solutions within a short time.


There are numerous medications that can stop or delay your period for a few months. These medications include antidepressants, antipsychotics, thyroid medications, anticonvulsants, and other chemotherapy medications.

There are several medications that can also bring your period back to normal, such as Hormonal contraceptives like Depo-Provera, Nexplanon, Mirena IUD, progesterone-only, and MiniPill.


Breastfeeding is also one of the causes of a late or missed period. You do not see your period as you used to do before, immediately after your baby is born. It is normal don’t panic.

Possible Causes Of Late Or Missed Period

If you are currently breastfeeding your little one, then lack of periods is normal because it is referred to as lactational amenorrhea, which is a phase that disrupts the regular menstrual cycle.

Within some months, your monthly period should be right back to normal. You may consult your doctor if your period is not back to normal. 


Stress is one of the most common causes of a late or a missed period, you may experience prolonged anxiety or been in an overwhelming situation, this may cause late or missed period, even more than one month, the fastest solution to this problem is to talk to your doctor or counselor about any problem you are passing through, either physically emotionally or socially, with this means you will be able to overcome the issue with the help of your doctor, counselor, family and friends and you will be stress-free. 

It may take one month or two before your cycles become regular again after your stress came back to a manageable level.

Thyroid Dysfunction

Thyroid dysfunction can also cause missed or late period if you have health issues like hypothyroidism and

hyperthyroidism, it may be disturbing your menstrual cycle because the thyroid will produce several hormones

that help regulate your body’s processes, and but if it off balance, then it may cause missed or late period. 

Excessive Exercise

Exercise is good for you and healthy for your body system as well, but did you know that it can also cause missed or late periods if it becomes excessive. Excessive exercise may cause lower levels of estrogen, which is the hormone that regulates your reproductive process.

Most athletes experience this, even secondary amenorrhea, which means they may miss their period for four months or more, depends on their daily training.

Birth Control

There are several types of birth control, but hormonal methods can cause your late period because hormonal birth control help to provide a form of estrogen combined with progesterone for some period with several hormone-free days.  

Weight Loss Or Weight Gain

Either you lose weight or gain weight, it may also be possible causes of a missed or late period, any change in your body weight will definitely affect your period because most health issues such as diabetes, bulimia, and irregular menstruation are caused by weight.

Make sure you consult your doctor before losing weight. Also, do the same if you want to gain weight.


Perimenopause is the entering, first, or early stage of menopause. During this moment, you may experience irregular periods. The main reason is the decrease in periods is caused by a decrease in the estrogen hormone.

Although, this affects women in their late 30s or early 40s only.

There are several possible reasons for late or missed periods. Most of these reasons are not dangerous for your health, while some are, if you missed two periods or more, you should consult your doctor. It may be one or two health problems that lead to your missed or late period. Please take it seriously and be sure to treat it immediately so that your menstrual cycle can come back to normal. 

Aside from health issues, there are numerous lifestyles that should be checked because they also are the cause of your late menstrual cycle. This lifestyle can cause missed period hormone replacement therapy, diet or stress reduction, and more.
